A six-image Lofoten photography essay, published in the September 2026 issue of Medium Format Magazine.

I have been photographing Lofoten for more than a decade. The way I look at these islands has changed a lot in that time.

The Silent Lofoten consists of six photographs, all made on a single day.

One Sunday between two workshops

The photographs were made on a free day between two workshops. For once nobody was waiting on me, and I had nowhere in particular to be. I spent the day driving around without a destination, stopping wherever something caught my eye. It’s the kind of day that doesn’t happen often when you’re leading a group.

I hadn’t planned a series. Only when I went through the pictures afterwards did I notice how well these six worked together. The story behind them is part of the essay.

Medium Format Magazine

I’m glad Olaf Sztaba chose to publish this Lofoten photography essay, The Silent Lofoten. I’ve been reading Medium Format Magazine for a while now, and I’ve always liked how much room it gives individual photographers to show their work.

More Lofoten Photography Essays

I’ve written more than one essay about these islands over the years. I’ve also led photography workshops across Lofoten, and much of what I learned along the way became the basis for my book, Lofoten Photography — Under Arctic Light: 86 photo locations across Lofoten and Senja, with GPS coordinates and seasonal notes for each spot.
