Stop searching. Start planning.

Planning a photography trip to Lofoten can quickly become overwhelming. Information is scattered across blogs, YouTube videos, Google Maps and social media. This guide brings it all together in one carefully curated reference — so you can spend that time planning your trip, not researching it.

Everything you need. Nothing you don’t.

Curated Locations

Only places genuinely worth photographing.

Precise GPS

Arrive exactly where you intended to be.

Best Light

Know when each location is at its best, with composition guidance where it matters most.

Companion App

Take your guide with you wherever you go.

The guide also includes a full planning chapter — getting there, accommodation, weather and gear.

Once you know where to go, the real magic begins.

The Lofoten Islands in northern Norway are among the most breathtaking destinations for landscape photographers in the world. Towering peaks rise straight from the sea, deep fjords carve through the land, and the Arctic light transforms every scene into something extraordinary. In winter, the dark skies come alive with the northern lights. In summer, the midnight sun bathes the islands in a warm, golden glow that never quite fades.

This guide takes you to the best photo locations across the Lofoten Islands — from Austvågøya in the north to Å at the very tip of the archipelago — and beyond, to the island of Senja, one of Norway’s most spectacular and least-visited destinations for photographers.

Over 80 carefully curated locations are described in detail, each with precise GPS coordinates, shooting tips, and recommendations for the best times of day and season. Every location was chosen because it offers something genuinely worthwhile to photographers — not because it is famous. Many spots are well off the beaten tourist path. Every location also features a QR code linking to an interactive map with up-to-date notes.

A complete chapter is dedicated to Senja — wilder and less crowded than Lofoten, with dramatic peaks, sweeping fjords, and a landscape that rewards patience and exploration.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Lofoten to use this guide well?

A week is a realistic minimum to cover the highlights across two or three regions. If you can stay ten days or longer, you’ll have far more room to wait out bad weather and catch each location in good light — Arctic conditions change quickly, and a buffer of a few extra days makes a real difference to your results.

Is this guide suitable for beginners, or do I need advanced camera skills?

Both. Each location comes with practical shooting tips explained in plain language, and the planning chapters cover the fundamentals — from choosing the right filters to working a tripod in Arctic wind. Experienced photographers will find the detailed GPS data and seasonal notes just as valuable.

Does the guide cover winter or summer — or both?

Both — but the focus is on autumn and winter, when Lofoten and Senja show their most dramatic side: storm light, snow, and the northern lights. Summer and the midnight sun are covered too, with seasonal notes for every location, but if autumn or winter light is what draws you north, this guide is written with that season in mind first.

Does the eBook include the same 80+ locations as the print edition?

Yes — the eBook (PDF) contains the full content of the print edition, all 364 pages, formatted for screen reading on tablet, laptop, or desktop.

Do I need to buy the book to use the web companion app?

The web companion app isn’t sold on its own — there’s no way to purchase access to it separately. It’s included at no extra cost with every copy of the book, print or eBook. If you’d like to see what it offers first, a free demo with six sample locations is available at schieflicht.de/photospots.

I don’t live in Germany — can I still get the print edition?

Yes. We ship the direct edition (with personal dedication option) within Germany only, but the standard paperback is available worldwide via Amazon. The eBook can be purchased and downloaded from anywhere.

Earlier editions: also in German and French

The original German-language edition Lofoten fotografieren — Im Bann des arktischen Lichts was published by dpunkt.verlag in 2018, with a revised and expanded second edition in 2021, which also covers Senja. It doesn’t include the web companion app or our most recent location updates. Learn more about the German edition or order on Amazon.de.

A French translation of that earlier edition is also available: Commander sur Amazon.fr.

For cafés and guesthouses

Do you run a café, guesthouse, or photography shop on the Lofoten Islands or Senja? Feel free to print and display this poster — we’d love to reach fellow photographers visiting the islands.
