I have been photographing Lofoten for more than a decade. The way I look at these islands has changed a lot in that time.
The Silent Lofoten consists of six photographs, all made on a single day.
One Sunday between two workshops
The photographs were made on a free day between two workshops. For once nobody was waiting on me, and I had nowhere in particular to be. I spent the day driving around without a destination, stopping wherever something caught my eye. It’s the kind of day that doesn’t happen often when you’re leading a group.
I hadn’t planned a series. Only when I went through the pictures afterwards did I notice how well these six worked together. The story behind them is part of the essay.

I’m glad Olaf Sztaba chose to publish this Lofoten photography essay, The Silent Lofoten. I’ve been reading Medium Format Magazine for a while now, and I’ve always liked how much room it gives individual photographers to show their work.
